‘Dog Bus’ Brings Smiles to the Scenic Rim Community.

In Queensland’s Scenic Rim, a bright bus full of happy dogs is doing more than turning heads, it’s helping build connection, confidence, and community.

The idea belongs to Jo McVilly who had a simple problem, too many dogs to walk. Her unique solution was to drive them instead. Her lovingly converted dog bus now transports canine passengers to adventure days and playtime, each dog secured comfortably in its own seat.

But the impact goes far beyond the dogs. Drawing on her background in outdoor education, McVilly also offers supported work experiences for neurodivergent and disabled people, helping them gain confidence and social skills while caring for the animals.

“The dogs don’t judge,” she says. “They just offer connection.”

The local community has embraced the initiative, with word spreading quickly as people see the positive changes in both their pets and the people involved. After a decade of steady growth, McVilly is now exploring the possibility of expanding the idea to other rural communities.

Powered by wagging tails and kindness, the IronBark dog bus proves that sometimes the simplest ideas can make the biggest difference.
