Six teens rescued from Mount Barney summit

Six teenagers have been rescued from the summit of Mount Barney after becoming stranded overnight in the Scenic Rim.

The group of six men, aged between 18 and 19, were not injured but were unable to make their way down the mountain and remained on the summit overnight while maintaining regular contact with the Queensland Police Service.

Emergency crews coordinated a rescue operation early the following morning, with the teenagers airlifted to safety by a rescue helicopter.

The incident occurred just a day after a separate tragedy in the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast, where an 18-year-old woman died after falling about 60 metres from a cliff at Mount Beerwah.

Her boyfriend also fell around 90 metres during the incident and suffered critical head injuries. He was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Mount Beerwah had been closed to the public following recent severe weather and remained closed on the day of the incident. Authorities have indicated the popular hiking destination is expected to reopen once conditions are deemed safe.
