Ipswich is striking a bold note this winter, calling on 400 trombonists to take part in a world record attempt during the 2026 SPARK Ipswich Arts Festival.
The event, set for Sunday July 12 at Tulmur Place in the Nicholas Street Precinct, aims to break the Guinness World Record for the largest trombone ensemble. The current record stands at 368 musicians, set in Washington DC in 2012.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the attempt reflects the city’s thriving arts and cultural scene. “There’s no better place to bring the brass together for such a unique and exciting challenge,” she said.
Organised by Ipswich City Big Band Music Director Matt Chambers, participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join, with support and music tailored to different skill levels. The ensemble will perform the iconic piece 76 Trombones as part of the record attempt.
Registrations are now open, with players required to bring their own instrument.
The record bid forms part of the SPARK Ipswich Arts Festival, running from July 8 to 12, showcasing a diverse program of music, theatre and cultural events across the city.
