For Gold Coast Health senior social worker Madeleine Wilde, helping patients extends far beyond medical treatment and hospital beds.
After first completing a placement in cancer services as a university student, Madeleine discovered her passion for hospital social work and has now spent seven years supporting patients at Robina Hospital.
Working alongside doctors, nurses and allied health teams, social workers assist patients throughout their hospital stay, helping them access services, plan safe discharges and navigate difficult life situations.
“Our goal is to help patients leave hospital in a better position than when they arrived,” Madeleine said.
Much of the work involves supporting vulnerable patients, including older people living with dementia, victims of domestic and family violence, and families facing sudden illness or major life changes.
Madeleine said one of the biggest current challenges is the ongoing housing and aged care placement crisis, which can leave some patients waiting extended periods in hospital for suitable care arrangements.
Despite the emotional demands, she says the role remains deeply rewarding.
“Even small interactions can make a big difference,” she said.
Madeleine encouraged others considering social work to see it as a chance to make a meaningful impact during some of the most important moments in people’s lives.
