Community Invited to Help Shape Future of Northern Beaches

Gold Coast residents are being encouraged to have their say on plans to protect the city’s iconic northern beaches from coastal erosion and storm damage, with community consultation set to begin next month.

The City has shortlisted three potential long-term coastal management solutions as part of a feasibility study aimed at safeguarding beaches between Surfers Paradise and Main Beach. The options include regular sand nourishment, the construction of an offshore artificial reef, and the development of an artificial headland.

Mayor Tom Tate said recent severe weather events, including the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, had highlighted the vulnerability of the coastline and reinforced the need for a sustainable long-term strategy.

“Protecting our beaches is essential for future generations,” Mayor Tate said. “We want to understand what matters most to the community as we investigate the most effective solution.”

The proposed measures aim to improve beach width, strengthen resilience to erosion, speed up recovery after storms and protect important coastal infrastructure. The project could also deliver additional recreational benefits, including improved surf conditions, enhanced environmental outcomes, new viewing areas and event spaces.

Community consultation will run from June 2 to June 23, giving residents the opportunity to provide feedback on the options under consideration. The results will help inform future decisions about protecting one of the Gold Coast’s most treasured natural assets.
