Gold Coast hosts record Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games

More than 3,600 police and emergency services personnel have gathered on the Gold Coast for the 20th Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games, running from October 10 to 17.

The biennial event has attracted competitors from 21 countries across Australasia and the South Pacific, including Vietnam, representing more than 25 police and emergency service agencies.

The week-long program features more than 70 sports, with new additions including five-a-side beach soccer, cornhole and kettlebell sports. Events are being held across the region, from beach volleyball at Surfers Paradise to lawn bowls in Robina and cycling on Mount Tamborine. Shooting events are being shared between Toowoomba and Belmont.

Queensland Police Commissioner Brett Pointing said the Games helped strengthen relationships between agencies and build connections among personnel who understand the demands of emergency service work.

The competition also highlights the role of sport in promoting physical fitness, mental resilience and camaraderie among serving, retired and volunteer personnel.

Queensland Police siblings and event ambassadors Montanna and Hunter McAvoy are among those competing. Hunter, a Palm Island-based officer, previously won six gold medals at the Hobart Games, while Montanna, an experienced middle-distance and trail runner, is making her debut.

The Gold Coast is hosting the Games for the second time, with organisers expecting the record participation to provide an economic boost through accommodation, hospitality and tourism spending.

The event was officially launched at the Gold Coast Sport and Leisure Centre in Carrara.
