A major new exhibition celebrating one of Australia’s most respected living artists is set to open at Ipswich Art Gallery later this month.
Painting the Celestial is the first comprehensive retrospective of Ipswich-based painter Leonard Brown, bringing together works spanning more than five decades.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the exhibition marks an important cultural moment for the city, highlighting Brown’s lasting contribution to Australian art and his strong connection to the local community.
Known for his minimal abstract style, Brown’s work is held in major national collections including the National Gallery of Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.
The exhibition has been curated by respected academic Sasha Grishin and will transform the gallery into an immersive, reflective space for visitors. Running from March 28 to June 14, the exhibition is expected to attract strong interest from both local audiences and visitors, further strengthening Ipswich’s growing reputation as a vibrant arts and cultural destination.
The gallery will reopen on March 27 following installation of the exhibition.
