O’Callaghan and Chalmers Dominate Opening Night of Australian Open

Australia’s top swimmers have made a powerful start to the 2026 Australian Open Championships at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, with Mollie O’Callaghan and Kyle Chalmers claiming dominant wins in the 100m freestyle events.

O’Callaghan, a five-time Olympic champion, was the only competitor to break the 53-second barrier in the women’s final, touching the wall in 52.66 seconds. She finished well ahead of Meg Harris and emerging talent Olivia Wunsch, reinforcing her status as one of the world’s leading sprinters. O’Callaghan described the result as an important step ahead of a busy international season.

In the men’s final, Chalmers delivered a commanding performance, winning in 48.39 seconds after leading from start to finish. He held off strong challenges from Flynn Southam and Kai Taylor, signalling he is in top form as he prepares to defend his Commonwealth title later this year.

Other standout performances included Sam Short’s world-leading swim in the 400m freestyle and Lani Pallister’s victory in the 800m freestyle, setting the tone for an exciting competition.
