Families are invited to step back into Queensland’s pioneering past at a special heritage celebration at Mayes Cottage House Museum this month.
The free community event, Dig it, Kingston, will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 10.30am to 2pm at the historic Mawarra Street site in Kingston.
Visitors can enjoy a range of old-fashioned children’s games, archaeological displays and talks exploring artefacts uncovered at Mayes Cottage, which was built in 1887. Hands-on activities will also give children and young adults the chance to try their hand at archaeology and learn more about local history in an interactive way.
Organisers are encouraging attendees to bring along a picnic and spend the day exploring the grounds and heritage surrounds of the cottage, which stands as a reminder of Queensland’s early settlement era.
The event is designed to celebrate the state’s rich heritage while helping younger generations connect with the stories and lifestyles of the past.
Mayes Cottage House Museum is open to the public from Thursday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm, with free entry and guided tours available year-round.
