Kirra Eagle Returns to Watch Over Coastline Once Again

One of the Gold Coast’s most recognisable landmarks has officially returned home, with the iconic Kirra Eagle reinstated atop Kirra Hill after several years away from public view.

The massive replica sculpture, weighing 1796 kilograms and stretching 4.5 metres across its wingspan, was carefully transported from a Tugun depot before being lifted into place by crane at R T Peak Memorial Park on Sunday morning.

Division 14 Councillor Gail O’Neill said the eagle’s return would be warmly welcomed by the community, describing it as a symbol deeply connected to Kirra’s identity and history.

The original sculpture, created by late local artist Craig Medson, first overlooked the coastline in 1983 and became a beloved local icon for decades. It was removed in 2021 during Kirra Hill renovation works after being deemed structurally unsafe.

The new replica was recreated by artist Tobias Bennett, with ARTPark overseeing the reproduction process. Modern materials and construction methods were used to replicate the original weathered steel appearance while improving durability in the harsh coastal environment.

A community celebration marking the eagle’s return will be held on Kirra Hill on May 30 from midday, featuring live music and a sausage sizzle for locals and visitors alike.
