Gold Coast Expands Beach Wheelchair Network to Boost Accessibility

The Gold Coast has expanded its Beach Access Program with three new self-service beach wheelchair lockboxes installed at Miami, Paradise Point and Labrador, improving access to the city’s coastline for residents and visitors with mobility needs.

The new additions build on two existing lockboxes at Burleigh Beach and form part of more than $250,000 invested since 2024 to enhance inclusive access across the city’s beachfront.

Division 12 Councillor Nick Marshall said the program is delivering strong results, with the Burleigh facilities recording 100 per cent user satisfaction.

“Since 2024, the City has invested more than $250,000 to install and maintain these lockboxes, supporting our goal of creating a city where everyone feels included,” Cr Marshall said.

Each lockbox contains a free-to-borrow beach wheelchair, life vest and instruction guide, with users able to access equipment via a simple QR code system.

Cr Marshall said the initiative benefits more than just people with disability.

“They also support seniors, people with medical conditions, chronic illness or temporary injuries to enjoy our beautiful beaches,” he said.

The program is delivered in partnership with local surf clubs and community organisations.

The new lockboxes are located near Hythe Street at Miami Beach, Paradise Point swimming enclosure, and Ian Dipple Lagoon at Labrador, further strengthening accessible coastal recreation across the city.
