More than 670 kilometres of roads across the Scenic Rim have been treated for fire ants during an intensive three-and-a-half-day control operation in February.
The coordinated effort targeted Department of Transport and Main Roads corridors as well as local roads surrounding turf farms in Wonglepong, Boyland, Biddaddaba, Allenview and Bromelton. A new development area near Canungra, previously known for heavy fire ant infestations, was also included in the treatment program.
Scenic Rim Mayor Tom Sharp said it was encouraging that only a small number of nests were found during the latest round of treatments.
“Roadside treatment is essential to stopping the spread of fire ants and protecting our natural environment, as well as important local industries such as tourism and agriculture,” he said.
Since July 2024, Scenic Rim Regional Council has treated thousands of kilometres of roads as part of a wider campaign to combat the invasive pest.
Fire ants are aggressive and capable of delivering painful stings to people, pets and livestock, and can severely impact farming and outdoor recreation if left unchecked.
Residents are reminded to report suspected fire ant nests within 24 hours by calling 13 22 68.
