A collaborative art project developed in Logan is now being showcased on the national stage, with a new exhibition opening at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
Thread: Connecting Stories and Community is the result of a pilot project supported by the Australian Government that explores connections between works in the National Portrait Collection and stories of local significance.
The exhibition grew from a series of workshops held across Logan throughout 2025, bringing together artists and creatives from South East Queensland. Artworks created during the workshops formed the foundation of the exhibition, which was first displayed at Logan Art Gallery between April and June this year.
Now on show in Canberra, the exhibition explores the relationship between garments and the histories, cultures and knowledge systems of First Nations peoples. Through a range of contemporary works, it highlights the role of clothing as a powerful expression of identity, connection and storytelling.
The project also demonstrates how partnerships between local communities and national cultural institutions can elevate regional voices and share important stories with audiences across Australia.
The exhibition will remain on display at the National Portrait Gallery until Sunday, September 13, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the unique perspectives and creative talents that emerged from the Logan-based initiative.
