New parking measures will be introduced in suburbs between Mermaid Beach and Burleigh ahead of the opening of Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3, with the City aiming to protect residential streets from becoming all-day commuter parking areas.
From 14 September, a new traffic area will introduce a three-hour on-street parking limit on weekdays between 9am and 5pm within 400 metres of the light rail corridor. The restrictions will not apply on weekends or public holidays.
Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said the changes were designed to improve parking availability for residents, businesses and visitors while reducing congestion as activity around the new transport corridor increases.
“This new traffic area will protect the amenity of residents who live within 400 metres of Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3,” Cr Hammel said.
“It will improve access to car parking by increasing turnover in these popular beachside locations and help ensure local residents, businesses and their customers can find available parking.”
Residents who qualify will be able to apply for a Resident Parking Permit at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/parkingpermits, allowing them to park beyond the three-hour limit within the designated area.
The City is also encouraging commuters to use public transport, walk or cycle when accessing the light rail network, rather than parking in surrounding residential streets. The measures form part of preparations for the expansion of the city’s public transport system.
