A major upgrade to Taylor Bridge and sections of Christmas Creek Road in Lamington will improve road safety, flood resilience and transport connections for Scenic Rim communities.
The $7.43 million project will replace the existing timber Taylor Bridge with a new concrete structure built at a higher level, reducing the risk of flood-related road closures that have long disrupted access to the area. The bridge approaches will also be reconstructed to create a safer road alignment.
Funded through a partnership between the Australian Government and Scenic Rim Regional Council, the project includes a $5 million contribution from the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with Council providing the remaining $2.43 million.
Transport and Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Duncan McInnes said the upgrades would benefit residents, businesses, emergency services and the region’s growing tourism industry.
Christmas Creek Road is a vital transport route linking southern Scenic Rim communities to Beaudesert while providing access to the Christmas Creek Valley and the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. It also supports agricultural industries, including cattle, dairy, hay and fresh produce, with the improved bridge allowing greater heavy vehicle access and more efficient freight movements.
The project is also expected to strengthen emergency response capabilities by improving evacuation routes and ensuring more reliable access for the SES and other emergency services during floods and bushfire events, while enhancing travel for local schools, businesses and visitors alike.
