Staff Photography Brings Comfort and Connection to Robina Hospital Ward

Artwork created by Gold Coast Health staff will soon help transform a refurbished ward at Robina Hospital into a more welcoming and supportive environment for older patients.

As works continue on the H2 East redevelopment, eight staff photographs have been selected for permanent display throughout the future Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU) and Acute Geriatric Unit (AGU). The images, chosen through a photography competition run by Gold Coast Health’s Creative Health Hub, feature familiar local scenes including beaches, waterways, wildlife and landmarks.

Nurse Unit Manager Tracey Miller said the artwork would play an important role in supporting patients, particularly those living with dementia.

“Artwork and familiar imagery can help people feel more connected and grounded during their care,” Ms Miller said. “The images also assist with orientation and wayfinding while creating a welcoming environment for patients and families.”

Among the successful contributors are staff from a variety of roles across the health service, including administration, nursing, food services and medical teams.

Women, Newborn and Children’s Services administration officer Jamie Bleakley, whose sunset photograph of Kirra Beach was selected, said he was proud to showcase his work as a vision-impaired photographer.

The refurbished 20-bed ward is expected to welcome its first patients in late July, featuring upgraded patient rooms, improved wayfinding and contemporary therapeutic design focused on the wellbeing of older adults.
